Marina
Audiologist & Hearing Science Researcher
Hello! My name is Marina, and I am so grateful to be joining the Deegan Hearing Clinic team.
My long journey into hearing healthcare began during my Bachelor of Fine Arts, when I took an introductory American Sign Language course and formed a meaningful connection with my instructor, who wore hearing aids. Inspired by her, I began creating accessible audio installations that invited people of all abilities to experience sound in more inclusive ways. Still, I felt called to understand sound and hearing on a deeper level and to impact others more directly.
I went on to complete a Master of Science in Audio Engineering in Nashville, where I immersed myself in acoustics, digital signal processing, and sound design. Living in a music city connected me with many musicians, including those coping with hearing loss. Wanting to support this community, I joined the hearing aid research lab at Vanderbilt University, where I worked with leading experts on audiology research and co-authored a publication about the effect of hearing aids on emotional responses to sound. This experience revealed how profoundly hearing technology can shape a person’s daily life.
Motivated to bridge research with patient care, I came to Western University for a combined Master of Clinical Science in Audiology and PhD in Hearing Science. This has allowed me to study sound scientifically while learning how to translate that knowledge into meaningful clinical support. Through my placements, I discovered how much I love working directly with patients and being part of their hearing journeys. I am now completing my PhD thesis while joining Deegan Hearing Clinic, and I am truly excited to meet our patients and help them achieve their best possible hearing. My goal is to ensure everyone who walks through our doors feels welcomed, understood, and cared for.
While I'm not in the clinic, you'll find me embracing the joys of being a new first-time mom or finding small pockets of time to recharge. You’ll often catch me winding down with a game of Zelda, playing chess in a cozy coffee shop with my husband, or keeping up with the latest in the research world.
Marina’s favourite sound: The soft crackling of a turntable needle settling onto a vinyl record.
