Travelling through Kenya and Tanzania offered me an astonishing change of pace, landscape, and perspective. Since my return to Deegan Hearing Clinic, so many of our wonderful patients have asked about the details, the wildlife, and the culture.
What surprised me most on this trip wasn’t the incredible sight of lions and elephants, but a profound realization about my own hearing and tinnitus.
Experiencing tinnitus firsthand gives me a deep empathy for everyone who walks through our doors seeking relief. What I noticed during those quiet, starlit nights in the African bush completely reframed how I think about natural soundscapes and sound therapy.
A Natural Masking Masterpiece
During the quietest moments of the trip, I had a sudden thought: My tinnitus was gone.
I sat outside our tent, listening intently, waiting for that familiar high-pitched ringing to return. It took me a few moments to realize that my tinnitus had not actually disappeared. Instead, the rich, vibrant sounds of nature were perfectly masking it.
The low hum of evening crickets, the rustle of dry acacia branches in the breeze, and the distant calls of night creatures created a seamless backdrop of broad-spectrum sound.
The natural ambient noise around us distracted my brain, shifting my auditory focus away from the internal ringing and toward the soothing rhythm of the environment.

At Deegan Hearing Clinic, we often discuss sound therapy as a primary tool for tinnitus management. Using white noise, sound generators, or customized hearing aids helps soften the contrast between internal ringing and external silence.
Experiencing this concept so vividly in the African wilderness was a powerful reminder of how effectively external sound can calm an overactive auditory system.
Unforgettable Wildlife Moments
Beyond the auditory insights, the journey was filled with unforgettable family moments. Seeing our children's faces light up as they spotted a giraffe and an elephant in their natural habitat was pure magic! These majestic animals walked right beside our safari vehicle, entirely unfazed by our presence.

Camping inside the national parks brought us closer to nature than we ever imagined. We woke up one morning to find fresh elephant dung right between our tents: gross but strangely exciting!
On another night, the soft sound of a zebra sniffing its way around our campsite kept us wide awake with excitement. The sunrises and sunsets painted the sky in shades of deep orange and purple, prompting me to take just as many photos of the horizon as I did of the animals.
Our trip into the Serengeti National Park was a wild adventure in itself. Bouncing along dusty roads in an open-top safari Jeep with zero visibility was the fastest, bumpiest, and most exhilarating ride our family has ever taken.

Connections Across Borders
Immersing ourselves in local cultures enriched our trip even further. We visited the Samburu Tribe, where the community warmly welcomed us to participate in their traditional dances and walk through their village.
Later in the trip, we visited another local town to learn about their daily work life. A local family generously hosted us for a traditional lunch cooked over an open fire. Leaving that home with full bellies and warm hearts made us appreciate the deep generosity of the people we met.
One afternoon, our boys brought out a soccer ball at a campsite in Kenya. Within minutes, local children heard the game and ran over to join in. Without sharing a common language, the kids passed, scored, and laughed together until the sun went down.
It was a beautiful reminder that connection transcends words.
