Accidents happen.
Perhaps you forgot to take your hearing aids out before a shower. Maybe they fell off the countertop and you stood on them. Or the age-old classic of “My dog ate my… hearing aids.”
Before you panic or toss your devices into the trash, there are a few quick fixes you can try at home before bringing them to us for a repair appointment or performance revamp.
1. Clean Your Hearing Aids
If your hearing aids are whistling, sound muffled or you can’t hear sound at all, a buildup of wax or dirt could be the culprit. With the way out of your ears blocked by your devices, earwax can get coated onto your hearing aids and lead to issues with fit and sound.
Hearing aids, like any technology out there, need a good cleaning sometimes to make sure they’re performing at their best for your needs; give your hearing aids a gentle wipe-down with a dry cloth to remove excess sweat, earwax or dirt and see if that can help with performance.
2. Replace Ear Domes or Wax Guards
The ear domes, or the parts of your hearing aid that go into your ear (like earbud domes), can seriously affect the fit and comfort of your device and lead to feedback from sound leaking out of your ear.
Swap to a different set of ear domes from your current ones to see if the adjustment to the fit will help with feedback issues. For situations where sound feels muffled or whistles, swapping the wax guard out for a clean one can often help, too.
3. Have You Tried Turning It Off and On Again?
A classic factory reset can often be exactly what your devices need most! If your devices aren’t amplifying sound or won’t connect to your smart device, try turning them off and letting them rest for a moment.
After turning them back on, quite often they’ll reconnect and work as needed. It’s a classic fix for good reason.
